NAIHC Legal Symposium: Balancing Science, Social Impact and Fear in Meth-Related Housing Policies

December 8, 2020
Virtual Meeting

Rachel Kramer and Kevin Klingbeil had the opportunity to present findings from a current project at the NAIHC Legal Symposium in a presentation called “Balancing Science, Social Impact and Fear in Meth-Related Housing Policies” along with co-presenters Jody Perez and Sid Shourds from the Salish & Kootenai Housing Authority. The project is being funded by the HUD ONAP training and technical assistance (T&TA) program and was requested by the Salish & Kootenai Housing Authority for the purpose of evaluating the existing research and spectrum of current standards for safe and acceptable levels of use-related methamphetamine contamination in managed housing (also known as third-hand meth exposure). Salish & Kootenai Housing Authority management seeks to incorporate this knowledge of contamination levels into their maintenance policy as one side of a “balancing of harms” discussion nested within a larger risk assessment process being conducted to develop new meth standards and policies in coordination with Seven Sisters Community Development Group.
