Indian Housing Block Grant Funding
The above dashboard, created using R Shiny, lets the user navigate around the map to see the change in the Indian Housing Block Grant (IHBG) funding across region, tribe, and years. IHBG is a formula grant that the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) allocates to Federally recognized Indian tribes or their tribally designated housing entity (TDHE) for a range of affordable housing activities.
The Formula Current Assisted Stock (FCAS) component provides funds for ongoing operation of the housing developed under the United States Housing Act (the predecessor of the IHBG program), and the Need component considers population, income, and housing conditions to determine needs-based funding level.
HUD uses American Community Survey (ACS) data to determine funding allocations for the Need portion, but ACS data may not always be accurate. Big Water Consulting can help tribes collect their own data to potentially challenge and replace the data used in the IHBG formula.
We work with clients to help create custom data dashboards using R Shiny and other JavaScript and R libraries.
