Project Description
The reservation of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is a remote community located on the northern tip of the Bayfield peninsula in Wisconsin. It has a recreation and resource-based economy focused on the lake and a large number of seasonally vacant units and second homes. One goal of the project was to correct existing data, especially with respect to seasonal residents and distortions caused by their demographics and income levels.
The Red Cliff Tribal Census and Community Needs Assessment was completed through a survey of all residential units within the boundaries of the Red Cliff Indian Reservation. Local field staff obtained completed surveys from 460 households and gathered information about 1,313 residents. The Census had a 97.0% response rate.
The dataset revealed the economic disparity between Native and non-Native households. The data will also support the development of a Comprehensive Plan and help the Band identify specific options for positive tribal interventions to address resident needs and create opportunities for individual and collective development.
