Increase of the U.S. Median Monthly Rent Estimates from 2015 to 2025 by HUD Fair Market Rent (FMR) Region

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) tracks median rent across all Fair Market Rent (FMR) areas. This map illustrates inflation-adjusted changes in median rent, using Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data to account for inflation. The analysis reveals significant rent increases concentrated along both coasts, particularly in California, Oregon, and Washington on the West Coast, and from Maine to Florida on the East Coast. Notable increases also appear in adjacent inland states. Only a small number of areas, primarily in the central regions of the country, have experienced real decreases in median rent.
